WHAT IS ADHD?

ADHD is a neurobehavioral disorder that leads to inattention, impulsivity and often but not always hyperactivity.

Symptoms include problems with concentrating, sitting still and completing tasks. Not everyone who has these symptoms has ADHD.

ADHD symptoms must negatively affect the person’s performance in more than one way and there are other criteria that must be met before a diagnosis can be made. The underlying problem for patients with ADHD lies in not having enough of the brain chemicals (neurotransmitters) allowing the brain to focus.

Is It ADHD?

Many people feel nervous even bringing up the question. You might suspect - or even feel certain - you or your child is experiencing symptoms of ADHD. But, how do you know for sure, and what steps can help you find clarity?

You're not looking for a rushed diagnosis or a quick prescription. But, you also don't want to be dragged through rounds of costly, unnecessary testing that leaves you with more questions than answers. And while the idea of a formal label can feel intimidating, deep down you know that you - or your child - have already been labeled in far more painful ways: as a behavior problem, as lazy, or as someone who simply isn't trying hard enough. The medical diagnosis is always ADHD. ADD is a 'slang' term for patients that have the disorder which means that they are less hyperactive than the majority of ADHD patients.
